Small Claims Court is a special court where people can resolve disputes quickly and inexpensively without a lawyer. It is designed for cases involving relatively small amounts of money.

When can you use Small Claims Court?

You can use it when:

• You are owed money (for example, unpaid rent, loans, or deposits).
• You were sold defective products or services.
• Your property was damaged, and you are seeking compensation.
The Highway Traffic Act (HTA) is a law in Ontario that sets out the rules of traffic. It applies to drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and anyone using public roads in the province.

Common Traffic Violations Under the HTA:

• Speeding.
• Running a red light or stop sign.
• Driving without a valid license or insurance.
• Using a cell phone while driving (distracted driving).
• Not wearing a seat belt.
• Failing to yield to pedestrians or emergency vehicles.
• Reckless or stunt driving.
What is a summary judgment?

A summary conviction is a type of less serious criminal offense in Canada. These cases are usually resolved quickly, carry minor penalties, and are handled in provincial courts without a jury.

Examples of summary conviction offenses:

• Disturbing the peace in a public place.
• Trespassing on private property at night.
• Public nudity.
• Harassing phone calls.
• Petty theft (below a certain amount, if charged summarily).

Possible penalties if convicted:

• Fine (generally up to $5,000).
• Up to two years less one day in prison.
• Probation.
• Criminal record.

Note: Criminal defense is outside our scope of services; however, we recommend Wali Law Professional Corporation for criminal matters.
